چکیده

We propose a method that identifies a mode of Rayleigh waves and separates it from body waves and from other modes, using quaternions to represent multicomponent data. Being well known the abilities of quaternions to handle rotations in space, we use previous results derived from Le Bihan and Mars [1] to prove that a Rayleigh-wave mode recorded by an array of vector-sensors can be approximated by a sum of trace-by-trace rotating time signals. Our method decomposes the signal into narrow-frequency bands, which undergo both a velocity correction and a polarisation correction. The aim of these corrections is to reduce the mode of interest to a quasi-monochromatic wave packet with infinite apparent velocity and quasi-circular polarisation. Once written in quaternion notation, we refer to this wave packet as “quaternion brick”. Based on theoretical considerations, we prove that this quaternion brick maps into the first quaternion eigenimage of the Quaternion Singular Value Decomposition. We apply this method to synthetic datasets derived from two vertically-heterogeneous models to extract the fundamental mode and we prove that it is correctly separated from either a higher mode of propagation or body waves with negligible residual. Results are presented in both time-offset and frequency-phase slowness domains.

Generation of Love Wave in a Media with Temperature Dependent Properties Over a Heterogeneous Substratum

The present paper deals with the generation of Love waves in a layer of finite thickness over an initially stressed heterogeneous semi-infinite media. The rigidity and density of the layer are functions of temperature, i.e. they are temperature dependent.  The lower substratum is an initially stressed medium and its rigidity and density vary linearly with the depth. The frequency relation of Lo...

Fully nonlinear inversion of fundamental mode surface waves for a global crustal model

[1] We use neural networks to find 1-dimensional marginal probability density functions (pdfs) of global crustal parameters. The information content of the full posterior and prior pdfs can quantify the extent to which a parameter is constrained by the data. We inverted fundamental mode Love and Rayleigh wave phase and group velocity maps for pdfs of crustal thickness and independently of verti...

Quaternion-based Finite-time Sliding Mode Controller Design for Attitude Tracking of a Rigid Spacecraft during High-thrust Orbital Maneuver in the Presence of Disturbance Torques

In this paper, a quaternion-based finite-time sliding mode attitude controller is designed for a spacecraft performing high-thrust orbital maneuvers, with cold gas thrusters as its actuators. The proposed controller results are compared with those of a quaternion feedback controller developed for the linearized spacecraft dynamics, in terms of settling time, steady-state error, number of thrust...

Problem of Rayleigh Wave Propagation in Thermoelastic Diffusion

In this work, the problem of Rayleigh wave propagation is considered in the context of the theory of thermoelastic diffusion. The formulation is applied to a homogeneous isotropic thermoelastic half space with mass diffusion at the stress free, isothermal, isoconcentrated boundary. Using the potential functions and harmonic wave solution, three coupled dilatational waves and a shear wave is obt...
